What are Dental Bridges?
A dental bridge is a restoration that replaces an entire
missing tooth. When you’re missing a tooth, not only does this have an impact
on your confidence, but it can have a severe impact on how well you’re able to
eat, chew, and bite into foods. Bridges are custom made for each patient, using
high-quality, realistic materials. Most bridges replace just one missing tooth
at a time, but it isn’t uncommon for a bridge to replace two, or even three
,missing teeth.
Why are Dental Bridges necessary?
Dental bridges are often needed to replace one or more
missing teeth in the mouth. The bridge normally contains two abutments, that
will be attached to surrounding teeth. The middle tooth, known as the pontic,
is false, and simply sits on the gum line. Not only do bridges enhance your
smile, but they can be helpful in improving oral function, as well as
preventing surrounding teeth from shifting due to dentition being missing.
What makes you a good candidate for a Dental Bridge?
Most people who need a dental bridge can safely come in for
the procedure. The procedure requires no incisions or sutures, and you can have
a permanent bridge in just two short visits. You will first need to come in for
a consultation appointment, so that we can determine if a bridge is right for
you. Patients who are missing teeth may be advised to have a bridge made and
placed in the area.
What happens during the Dental Bridge procedure?
Local anesthetic is administered directly to the area where
the bridge will be placed. The two surrounding teeth are filed down to create
small stumps for the bridge to on top of. Impressions, which are molds of the
teeth, are taken to be used for both the temporary and permanent bridge. The
temporary bridge is made for you at the first appointment, and can be worn
while the permanent one is being made. You’ll come in for a second appointment
to have the permanent bridge placed, and it will be adjusted to improve the
fit.
