What are Dental Fillings?
Dental fillings are crucial restorations that are used in
areas of a tooth that have decayed. The decay is removed, and a composite filling
will be put into its place. Not only does this improve the look of your smile,
but it prevents tooth sensitivity, and can help prevent future decay from
forming. Fillings can last for many years before they’ll need to be replaced.
Why are Dental Fillings needed?
The most common reason for needing a filling is because you
have a cavity. We can detect cavities with both an oral examination, as well as
through your x-rays. You may need to have older fillings replaced, especially
if you want to go with a tooth-colored composite filling, removing old amalgam
(metal) ones. Fillings are ideal for both pediatric and adult patients.
What makes you a candidate for Dental Fillings?
To determine if you need a filling, we will perform an exam.
While children are more susceptible to cavities and tooth decay, adults can get
cavities as well and may need fillings. Multiple fillings can be placed at the
same appointment if they are on the same side of the mouth. Fillings are
long-lasting and durable so that you can enjoy a restoration that last for
years to come.
What happens during the procedure for Dental Fillings?
The very first step of the filling procedure is
administering local anesthetic. This prevents any pain from being experienced
during the appointment. The decay is then removed from the tooth, leaving
behind a small hole. This hole is prepped for the composite material, and the
actual filling is then placed. We smooth the composite filling into place, and
remove any excess to prevent jagged edges. The material is cured with a bright light,
and you’ll be ready to leave the office. Simple fillings normally take just a
half-an-hour to complete in-office.
