What are Dental Exams & Cleanings?
Cleanings and exams are essential to keeping your mouth
healthy. They should be done twice a year in order to keep your teeth healthy,
and to check for minor problems so they can be treated before they’re allowed
to get worse. The cleaning will check the health of your gums, so that we can
detect signs of both gum disease and gingivitis. Our goal is to provide you
with the care that you need, in a calm, comfortable environment.
Why are Dental Exams & Cleanings needed?
Both cleanings and exams are needed because they help to
keep your teeth strong, healthy, and bright. Cleanings help to remove hardened
plaque, which is known as calculus, from the teeth, and check for gum health
problems. The exam checks for cavities, signs of oral cancer, loose or lost
restorations, and other intra-oral problems. Each member of your family should
be coming into the office twice a year for optimal preventative treatment.
What makes you a good candidate for Dental Exams &
Cleanings?
Everyone is a great candidate for cleanings and exams. In
fact, children as young as one or two years old should come in for their first
preventative care appointment. Ideally, these appointments should be done every
six months to keep up with the health of your smile. However, it is never too
late to come in for an exam and cleaning, as we can help to establish the care
that you need.
What happens during Dental Exams & Cleanings?
First, the hygienist will take x-rays of your teeth that
will be useful in detecting problems. The cleaning is then performed, and the
teeth polished and flossed. Next, the hygienist will check the gums for signs
of inflammation and gum pocketing. Our doctor will then come into the room and
perform the exam. He is looking for cavities, oral cancer, loose restorations,
and other problems. We will create a treatment plan that is specific to your
dental needs, and can schedule you to have this work done as needed.
