What is a Periodontal Scaling and Root Planing?
As gum disease develops, tiny pockets will form around the
teeth, allowing bacteria and plaque to become lodged in these areas. It can be
difficult, or nearly impossible, to clean out these pockets on your own, which
will lead to the disease eventually progressing. A scaling and root planing is
done by a licensed hygienist, and focuses on cleaning out these small pockets
and prevent progression of gum disease. The procedure, which is sometimes
referred to as a deep cleaning, is normally done in two appointments.
Why is a Periodontal Scaling and Root Planing needed?
A scaling and root planing is normally needed when you have
gum disease. The procedure will help to prevent the disease from further
progressing, and can help the gums to heal naturally on their own, over time.
Scaling and root planings are ideal for patients with mild to moderate gum
disease, who would benefit from this type of cleaning. An exam can determine if
you need, and will benefit from, a deep cleaning.
What makes you a good candidate for a Periodontal Scaling
and Root Planing?
The majority of patients with gum disease are good
candidates for the actual procedure. An exam that checks the health of your
gums will help to determine if you have gum disease, and at what stage the
disease currently is. The procedure is aimed at patients with mild to moderate
periodontal disease. More severe cases may require periodontal surgery in order
to treat the condition.
What happens during a Periodontal Scaling and Root Planing?
One side of your mouth will be numbed using a local
anesthetic. The teeth are then thoroughly cleaned by the hygienist, who will
clean deep into the gingival pockets around the teeth. The roots are smoothed
so that bacteria is unable to adhere to these areas. You will be scheduled to
come in at another time for the other side of your mouth to bed deep cleaned.
You may need to come in several times to have a scaling and root planing in
order to maintain and treat your periodontal disease.
