What is Teeth Whitening?
As you age, and because of certain lifestyle and dietary
habits, teeth can begin to look yellowed and dull. At-home whitening may
deliver sufficient results, but you may be looking for whiter and brighter
teeth, which only professional whitening can provide. We offer in-office
whitening that helps to remove years of stains and discoloration. A white, full
smile can help you look younger and healthier.
Why is Teeth Whitening needed?
Teeth whitening may be needed or wanted because your smile
is dull and yellow. If you’re a smoker, chew tobacco, drink a lot of coffee or
tea, or eat staining foods such as berries, your teeth probably aren’t as white
as they could be. You may want to whiten your teeth because you’re tired of
feeling badly about your appearance. Others may choose professional whitening
because they’re getting married, going to a class reunion, or attending another
important event.
What makes you a good candidate for Teeth Whitening?
You will come into our office for a consultation appointment
and exam. Ideally, a patient wanting whitening should have been to see the
dentist at least once in the past year. Whitening may not be effective at
lightening existing restorations within the mouth. It probably will not have an
impact on veneers, fillings, crowns, or bridge work that you have placed in
your mouth.
What happens during Teeth Whitening?
First, you will be seated comfortably in one of our dental
rooms. You will then have a whitening gel applied to the teeth, and a bright,
warm light will be aimed directly on the teeth. This light accelerates and
activates the gel to get a stronger whitening effect. After a half hour, the
old gel is removed, and a new layer of gel is applied along with the same
light. After another half hour, you’ll be ready to enjoy a brighter and whiter
smile. Most patients experience a color difference of about three to eight
shades lighter than when they came into the office.
