What are Dental Implants?
Dental implants have quickly become the go-to option for
patients who are missing teeth, or who want to keep a denture securely in place.
Implants are often made of titanium, and are placed deep into the jaw bone.
Over the course of a few months, the implant will bond with surrounding bone,
becoming a permanent solution for missing dentition. Implants can even be used
for bridge work and dentures, so that they’re kept firmly in place.
Why are Dental Implants needed?
Most often, a dental implant is necessary if you’re
completely missing one or more teeth. Single implants help to replace one tooth
that has fallen out or been extracted. Two or more implants can be used to keep
a fixed bridge in place when several teeth are missing. Four or more
strategically placed implants can securely keep a denture in place without the
need for gels, creams, and adhesives.
What makes you a candidate for Dental Implants?
In order for implants to heal successfully, they need solid
and healthy bone to fuse with over time. If you suffer from bone loss, or have
areas of bone loss, a bone graft may be necessary before the procedure is done.
You should have the ability to heal fully from the procedure, and be free of
any medical condition that may affect your ability to recover. We can perform
an exam and go over your medical history to determine if implants are right for
you.
What happens during the procedure for Dental Implants?
We first discuss sedation options with you prior to the
surgery. We will administer anesthetic of your choice, so that the procedure is
easier and more comfortable for you. A tiny incision is made through the gums,
and the post of the implant inserted into the bone underneath. The gums are
sutured, and you will need to come in regularly to check on how well your
implant is healing. Implants heal in a few months, and you can then have a
crown, bridge, or new denture made for the restoration.
